If You Can't Tone It, Tan It: Choosing a Self-Tan That Looks Natural

A good self-tan is a matter of formula, preparation and undertone. The right choice depends on how much time you have and how your skin reacts to DHA.

How self-tan works

Most self-tans use dihydroxyacetone, usually shortened to DHA. It reacts with amino acids in the outermost layer of dead skin cells, producing brown tones over four to eight hours. The colour does not come from a dye sitting on the surface, which is why it fades gradually as those cells shed.

Because the reaction takes time, a self-tan must stay on for the full development period. Washing too early gives a patchy result that looks more orange than brown.

Mousse, lotion or spray

Mousse is the easiest to spread evenly on most people and dries quickly, which suits a quick application before bed. Lotion gives the most control on dry patches such as elbows and knees, though it takes longer to dry. Spray is fast and good for large areas, but it needs practice and a well-ventilated room.

Pick the formula you will apply evenly, not the one with the best reviews. A streaky application is hard to fix once the DHA has developed.

Undertones and the test patch

Self-tans vary in how warm or cool they develop. Test a small patch on the inner arm 24 hours before a full application. If the colour is too orange on the first day, choose a formula labelled for a lighter or cooler finish, or dilute the product with a little unscented moisturiser.

Preparation and aftercare

Exfoliate the day before, pay attention to dry patches, and shave at least a few hours before applying. Apply a thin layer of moisturiser to dry areas first, then tan with the mitt in long strokes. Keep water off the skin for four to eight hours, and avoid sweating heavily until the colour sets.

Questions people ask

How long does a self-tan last?

Usually five to seven days, fading as the outer skin sheds. Exfoliating gently before reapplying keeps the colour even.

Does self-tan protect against sun?

No. It does not provide meaningful sun protection, so keep using sunscreen outdoors.

Why did my tan turn orange?

Usually the formula is too warm for your undertone, or it was applied to dry patches without preparation. A lighter formula or a longer prep routine fixes it.
