Qualifications and training
Ask which training the person has completed and whether they hold the licence your state or country requires for that treatment. Some services, such as lash extensions or chemical peels, have strict training rules in some places. A good practitioner answers the question without hesitation.
Hygiene and tools
Look at how tools are handled. Single-use items should be opened in front of you. Reusable tools should be cleaned between clients using a disinfectant that is approved for the purpose. Ask how the room is cleaned and where you will be treated.

Skin, allergies and medical questions
Tell the practitioner about any medicine you take, recent treatments such as peels or laser, pregnancy, eye conditions, sunburn, and any known allergy. A patch test is the honest answer to new products, and the practitioner should offer one when a product is new to you.
Money, timing and aftercare
Ask for the full price, including any product or extra charge, the cancellation and late policy, and what aftercare you need. A written aftercare sheet is a good sign. Ask how long the result will last, and how to reduce the need for a repeat visit.

Questions people ask
Should I tell the salon about a medical condition?
Yes. Tell the practitioner anything that could affect the treatment, and ask whether a doctor's note is needed for a specific service.
Is a cheap treatment always worse?
Not always, but the price should match the time, the products and the training. A very low price often means shortcuts in the consultation or the products.
